I decided to take a nap in my car today. It is very relaxing and comforting, especially in warm weather. Try it.

After I decided to get out of the car in fear that I would be carjacked, I noticed a black dude and white girl walking towards the parking structure I was in...they were holding hands.

I tend to look longer than I should at interracial couples, mainly out of pure curiosity. After like a 3 second look, I turned away, no longer interested. I noticed that my iphone charger and my earphones were covered in melted chocolate in my pocket. (I stole candy from my Mom's house and it backfired)

So I'm lookin at my charger like f*cccckkkkk when they walk past me and I hear him say somethin, to which she replies "LOL shut up nigga I never did that shit!"...

So I pause, look up, look at them, then look around to see if anyone had heard it, and I just watch them walk away, stunned at her ignorance but more at his.

"I turn on the TV...and see me...and see nothing" - Kanye West

(just to clarify, this is not a comprehensive review, just my comments on the album)

808s and Heartbreak is the third studio album from rapper (and now, singer) Kanye West. Now don't get me wrong. This nigga can NOT sing lol. Its just not in the cards for him. But that auto-tune, vocal correction, vocoder, the T-Pain effect, whatever you wanna call it, it just made all of his dreams come true. No more Curtis Mayfield and Ray Charles samples, oh no. Its time to hear Kanye sing. Sigh. Whatever. If you don't read into it too much, its actually pretty good. He gets overly poetic and forced at times and it sounds overdone, but for the most part, this is a great album. Very progressive. Let's go through song-by-song.

1. Say You Will

Wow, you gotta have courage to be a rapper and start your album with a 6-minute track of you singing a total of about 20 words. Anyway, beat is fire! Just...fire!!! Kinda reminds me of when I first heard "Good Morning". Kanye allows you three entire minutes at the end to enjoy JUST the beat...but if you don't like it, it's more like three minutes to realize you really do hate Kanye lol.

2. Welcome to Heartbreak

This song goes hard. The beat is fire, and Kid Cudi brings a sick hook. The meaning behind the song is powerful, with Kanye talking about how he cant experience the joys of a normal life becuase he's a victim of celebrity, but the lyrics are a little too simple here.

3. Heartless

I was listening to this song non-stop for weeks. Almost to the point I was gettin tired of it. Beat is ridiculous, lyrics are dope, and you can tell he put in work to make this one perfect. He even remastered it and rereleased the single cuz he heard it in the club and it sounded too soft lol.

4. Amazing ft. Jeezy

MAN this song is my favorite on the CD. The only one I had to start over TWICE when the song was done. This beat gets me hype and I love when there is a choir in the background of songs. (I think I first fell in love with choirs when I heard "Gangsta's Paradise" but yeah anyway) Right when you think its over, Jeezy brings his verse. His lyrics arent the greatest, but he knows how to ride the beat (no homo) and make it sound better than it is

5. Love Lockdown

I'm sure by now everybody has their own opinion of this song. You either love it or hate it. The taiko drums on this track go extra hard, but once again, Kanye singing sounds like Mary J Blige rapping...i'm just saying. Anyway the meaning behind this song is AWESOME. Me and the homie were choppin it up, and I was enlightened. The song is about Africa.....think about it.

6. Paranoid ft. Mr. Hudson

This song features an uptempo beat and introduces Mr. Hudson, who is signed to Kanye's label. The beat is good, and the hook is catchy. It can sound sing-songy, but the thing is, you have to appreciate this one album-wise cuz its just about the only one where he comes close to actually rappin. Other than that tho, the lyrics can get weak here ("A little time-out might do you good, might do us good, for we be done for good")

7. RoboCop

Kanye's worst offender. I can tell this song started off as a cool concept about a chick bein like a robocop, and conceptually, it works well. The machine-like sounds in the background are sick. But it turned into something bad. The lyrics are uninspired and the beat sounds like something that should be in an Anime cartoon. Nigga this is not Dragonball Z!

8. Street Lights

Street Lights is a good song. Nothing bad or good to say about this one. Good beat. And the lyrics are accurate! lol ("I'm just not there in the streets") Lol j/k i couldnt help it

9. Bad News

Lyrics are solid here, and I connected with the song. By now, you should be very aware of the 808 theme that is present throughout the album. Kanye is extremely talented at weaving drum and piano into solid tracks.

10. See You In My Nightmares

The song is good, but could've been so much better. It wasnt worked on enough. The beat could've progressed a little more, but beyond nitpicking, Lil Wayne has a good appearance, even though I'm tired of him singin too.

11. Coldest Winter

This song samples Tears for Fears 1983 song "Memories Fade", and although I like the beat, and can appreciate the song being about his Mom, Kanye's singing just lacks believability. Thats not a shoot on him. Maybe its because he's a rapper. I dont know. Maybe he's just on a level that I just cant connect with because I havent gone through it. But to me it just sounds like he's so focused on making himself sound genuine that he's making himself sound fake.

12. Pinocchio Story

This "freestyle", sung in Singapore, is definitely one of the best tracks on the album. Unlike other songs on here, this one I can truly feel and understand. All eight minutes are completely listenable , as Kanye expands on "Welcome to Heartbreak" by talking about his life some more. He uses the metaphor of Pinocchio wanting to be a real boy. He compares himself to the fictional puppet by saying that while Pinocchio's lies kept him from being a real boy , it is Kanye's truth-spittin that keeps him from real boy status. The song is a great exploration into the psyche of an American celebrity.

Overall Synopsis

This is my opinion. I think Kanye is passionate about being passionate. That sounds weird but its true. Its why a lot of the lyrics on this album sound forced. He was determined to make this record legit, but in doing that he kinda took away the soul of what makes his albums so great, which is just him being himself. Before I outro, let me just publicly say that I REALLY MISS THE OLD KANYE. Don't get me wrong I'm all for progression and evolving as an artist, but I do NOT believe in completely abandoning what made your fans fall in love with your music in the first place. Kanye has publicly said that "808s and Heartbreak" is only the beginning of his foray into pop and singing, and that saddens me. What about the hood Kanye? WHAT ABOUT THE HOOD??

I had about a 20-minute conversation with this dude yesterday and he really inspired me. We talked about, what else, the plight of black people, but he had some really profound things to say on the matter that realy got me thinkin. Also, we talked about my future and what I can do to be a great filmmaker. It was a great conversation, and I just wanna shout him out for taking the time out to talk to me. Thanks man.
